Remember when we blew up the servers at Paste... →
astronautalis:
a few months ago, the fine folks at Paste Magazine asked me and the boys to stop by in the morning to play a concert for them and the sleepy eyed staff. We might have been a tad hung over and road weary, but that is no reason no to yell and sweat at 11am…then we went and ate waffle house next door. a perfect morning in Atlanta. Check out the video and reblog this like mad!...

Interview: Nobs of the @Astronautalis live band
Here's the first of many interviews to come! I had a chance to ask my homie Nobs (Maschinist for the Astronautalis live band) a few questions. I've played several shows him and he definitely kills. If you have a chance to catch him with Astronautalis I suggest you DEFINITELY make it out. Sick show for sure.
Aswell: For the readers who aren't familiar with your work, can you give a short introduction?
Nobs: I started making beats in 99. I would produce most of my own stuff that I rapped over for our label Fingerprint Records. Teamed up with this rapper named Dez mid 2000s to entirely produced 2 albums for him. That's what I'm most known for. Then after that it's just been playing with Astronautalis.
Aswell: How long ago did you first start finger drumming?
Nobs: I'm actually still in the process of becoming actually "good" at it. I played a real drum kit before I ever laid my hands on drum pads. It took me a 8 hr day of practice to get my leg and arm independent of one another. Switching over to do that with your fingers on a smaller surface seems more difficult because it feels unnatural. So I basically began "finger drumming" last year. I am a breaks dude so I never felt the need to actually physically drum when I could loop stuff up.
Aswell: What was the first drum machine/controller you used?
Nobs: MPC 2000XL. I got a $2,000 Sam Ash credit line and bought a whole studio.
Aswell: What hardware/software do you use now?
Nobs: I use Maschine now. I'm still working on actually creating soundscapes on it as its different from an MPC. The actual software takes some getting used to when coming from an Akai. Its actually easier with more capability and endless functions. It's just different.
Aswell: Can you give us any insights from finger drumming in a band?
Nobs: Thing is when I play with a band we have a drummer so I play the electronic drums when they're needed. I basically play every sample loop and instrumental note a guitar and drum kit cant emulate. I consider it an instrument though because I am basically playing a song.
Aswell: Can you give us a 16 pad placement break down?
Nobs: Usually I go in order from left to right from bottom to top. Most of the main sounds are on 1-8 and the basslines or extras (sometimes the hooks) are on 9-16. Its more visual when its in order. If I'm only chopping a drum break up usually ill start at the right and work left so my right hand can do kicks and hats. The left will handle extra kicks and snares, open hats, etc... Then if I add a bassline I can do that with the left as well....
Aswell: What do we have to look forward to from you in 2012?
Nobs: You can look for me blasting shows with Astronautalis in the future. No plans for music yet. I run my own rare vinyl records business. I buy and sell collectible records. Diggers unite haha.
